Description:

Water holds a varied, rich history for humans—especially for those who’ve lived in Madison over the centuries. While some flocked to the waterside for play, others used water for rituals and ceremonies. This artwork juxtaposes two different roles that Madison’s lakes have played in the lives of residents, symbolized by a lifeguard on duty and Reverend Joseph Washington of Mt. Zion Baptist Church facilitating a baptism. The warm colors and ridged lines throughout this artwork mirror the depth and dynamism of human activities that Madison’s Lake Monona has enjoyed.
